Food Not Lawns
The book Food not Lawns, How to Turn Your Yard into a Garden and Your Neighborhood into a Communitywritten by Heather Flores and published by Chelsea Green has created a movement to replace traditional home lawns with sustainable fruit and vegetable gardens. Their web site www.foodnotlowns.net includes chapters in the US and Europe and includes cities like Portland, Bellingham and Spokane, but none in Seattle--yet. The site includes a seven step outline that details how to create a local chapter beginning with the research and organization, task delegation, resource location and all the way through the logistics of growing small crops to replace traditional lawns.
The Urban Homestead
A great companion book for Food not Lawns is The Urban Homestead by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen published in 2008 by Process. Billed as an essential handbook for a fast-growing new movement: urbanites becoming gardeners and farmers. A great read for those of you that want to get started growing and harvesting your own vegetables, raise chickens, and live a more self-sufficient life. Kelly, Eric and friends have a great blog at homegrownevolution.com with tips for realizing your urban garden.
