Capturing Spring Showers
Have you ever considered capturing and re-using rainwater? Starting a rainwater collection system can be fast and easy (Capturing rainwater is not a new trend, it has been done for centuries)! Not only is it the greenest way to water your yard, flowers, or garden (some even use it for domestic use inside their homes; by far far the greenest practice of all!), it can also save you money on your water bill; not to mention significantly reducing your overall household water usage.
So how does it work and why is it considered "green"? Rainwater harvesting (also called roofwater harvesting) involves the collection, storage, and distribution of rainwater from the roof, for use inside and outside the home or business. Its considered green because it reduces dependence on water supplies, also reducing damage to our creeks, water habitats and organisms caused by stormwater runoff. By using rainwater for washing laundry, flushing toilets and pressure washing houses and watering the yard, we can further contribute to water conservation by limiting the use of drinking water and reducing the energy used to pump that water from the municipal supply.
Considering collecting some rainfall yourself? Great! Depending on your expectations, collecting and harvesting rain can get as technical or as simple as you wish. First, consider how you want to utilize your collected rainwater (watering plants, washing car, laundry etc). This will help guide you in the direction for the appropriate rain barrel, tank, or vessel. These rain collectors come in all different sizes and materials. One of the simplest, most popular, and cost efficient is the basic plastic rain barrel. There is also glass, metal and wood. You can even make your own! Any type you choose, this is hands down the greenest way to re-use water!
